Field borders of
sorghum arc to be planted in narrow
strips around the edge of each culti-
vated field. Field 3,36 acres of pasture
that contains an intermittent lake, is
not to be eon toured at this time beeause
drifting soil has aeeumulated from ad-
jacent fields. Field 6, 46 acres, is to
bc revcgetated for permanent pasture,
using thc plan discussed on pages
21-24. A fence was eonstructcd on
thc terrace that forms the upper boun-
dary of this ficld and the other fenee
was put on the contour. Both these
fcnccs followed the soil-type boundary
but thc terrace in field 7 was dropped
farther clown the slope in order that the
cultivated land might receive the bene-
fit of the additional runoff wa"ter pro-
vided by its construetion. It is also
planned to contour furrow the leascd
pasture, field 8, as soon as convenient.
The United States Department of
Agriculture has given furthcr assistance
to the districts by providing from the
Civilian Conservation Corps labor and

,cquipment for district cooperators
through the camp at Springfield. In
addition, the southeastern distriet has
obtained labor from the Work Projects
Administration. The Farm Security
Administration requested that their
clients enter into a cooperative agree-
ment with the district in order that
erosio)l could be better controlled on
their farms. Agreements for the con-
struction of. water facilities are written
by the Farm Security Administration
and thc districts to provide adequate
water on farms whose operators are
financially unable to do such work. '
Since 1937 the Federal Government
under the Bankhcad-Jones Purchase
Program, now administered by the Soil
Conservation Service, has purchased
approximately 200,000 acres of land.
The Government faces the problem of
restoring native grass cover to about
100,000 acres of the purchased land,
which have been cultivated and se-
vcrely eroded and are now of little
value for grazing. The purchased lands
are being fenced into large pastures for
joint use by qualified permittees.
