<br />Operations of all Upper Basin reservoirs other than Lake Powell are <br />not impacted by the operation strategy, and therefore, are identical <br />for all alternati~e strategies as well as for the base case. ~ccord- <br />ingly, shortages in the Upper Basin are not affected by a change in <br />the strategy. <br /> <br />General Findings and Trends <br /> <br />General findings and trends of the study are listed below. <br /> <br />1. Deliveries to CAP and MWD tend to be somewhat higher with the <br />alternative strategies than they are with the base case and are <br />greater with the "high-assurance" alternative strategies than with the <br />"low-assurance" alternative strategies. <br /> <br />2. Total system power generation and generation in both the Upper and <br />Lower Basins tend to be somewhat higher with the alternative strate- <br />gies than with the base case, particularly for the wetter <br />hydrologic traces. In general, the "high-assurance" strategies tend <br />to provide more power generation than the "low-assurance" strategies. <br />Powerplant bypasses tend to be somewhat lower with the alternative <br />strategies than with the base case. <br /> <br />3. Releases averaging more than 28,000 ft3/s from Lake Mead are <br />reduced substantially by alternative operating strategies compared to <br />the base case. The reductions are greater for the "high-assurance" <br />alternative strategies than for the "low-assurance" alternative strate- <br />gies. <br /> <br />4. Monthly releases from lake Mead of 21,000 ft3/s or more are also <br />reduced by the alternative operating strategies. <br /> <br />5. End-of-study storages tend to be higher for the base case than for <br />the alternative strategies and higher for the "low-assurance" alter- <br />native strategies (OS 0.70and OS 0.80) than for the "high-assurance" <br />(OS 0.90 and OS 0.99) alternative strategies. This pattern is the <br />result of maintaining additional space to achieve the specified <br />assurance that flood control releases will not be required. <br /> <br />6. Average annual flow-weighted salinity at fmperia] is not impacted <br />very significantly (only about 10-20 mg/L) by changing from one <br />operating strategy to another. <br /> <br />7. Although annual release patterns from Lakes Mead and Powell vary <br />from one strategy to another, average annual releases from these <br />reservoirs over the study period do not vary greatly (more than about <br />5 to 8%) from one strategy to another. <br /> <br />8. Significant annual Shortages rarely occurred in the Lower Basin. <br />Annual shortages in the Upper Basin were evident but were not impacted <br /> <br />8 <br />
