WilTED STATES
DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR
BUREAU OF RECLAMATION

Tentative Operating Plan
Initial Acquisition of Storage in
Blue Mesa Reservoir--Curecanti Unit
Colorado River Storage Project

October 6, 1965

Closure vill be initiated at Blue Mesa Dam on October 25 by restricting

the rate of releases to approximately 100 c.f.s. This rate of release

vill continue until mid-February 1966 vhen downstream vater uses re-

quire greater releases at Blue Mesa Dam. Releases thereafter vill be

governed by existing vater requirements and additional storage vill be

accumulated only from streamflov vhich exceeds present uses on the

river. We estimate that the reservoir vater surface vill reach about

elevation 7,360 feet by January 15, 1966, at vhich time releases from

the dam vill be shifted from the temporary to the permanent outlet

vorks and the temporary bypass conduit in the tunnel plug vill be per-

manently sealed. The use of the permanent outlet vorks vill permit

modification of the 100-c.f.s. release as required to satis~ any dovn-

stream vater requirements.

If runoff is adequate, ve will attempt to acquire about 300,000 acre-
feet of vater by June 1966 (elevation 7,424 feet) to permit adequate

irrigation and pover releases through the fall and vinter of 1966-1967

vithout drawing the reservoir belov the inactive power level (7,393

feet; 192,000 acre-feet). Any vater released from Taylor Park Reser-

voir and impounded during the filling of the dead storage pool at Blue
