3. One Colorado pikeminnow that ascended the fish ladder 2 July
was recaptured 5 August approximately 30 miles upstream in
the Gunnison River.

4. A total of 7.598 fish were trapped and counted in the
Redlands Diversion Dam fishway between 16 March and 28
October (Appendix: Table 1). Native fishes comprised 93X of
the total number of fishes collected in 1997, compared to 94X
to that each in 1996 and 1997. Bluehead sucker comprised 55X
of the catch. and bluehead sucker. 30X. Channel catfish
comprised the largest number of nonnative fish (2X) , white
sucker the second most. 1%. The number of channel catfish
collected in the fish trap has increased in three years: in
1996 there were 24, in 1997 there were 94. and in 1998 there
were 157. No northern pike. largemouth or smallmouth bass
were captured.

5. The total number of all fishes that used the fish ladder in
1998 decreased by 4.937 (38X) from 1997 (Table 1). The
number of native fishes that used the fish ladder in 1998
decreased by 4,492 fish (39X) from 1997. The number of
bluehead sucker collected in the fish trap decreased
appreciably in 1998 from the previous two years. The
percentage decreased from 42% and 43% in 1996 and 1997,
respectively, to 30X in 1998.

6. All fish found in the fish trap were counted and sorted by
species. All native fish including rainbow and brown trout
were released upstream of Redlands Diversion Dam. All
nonnative species plus hybrid suckers found in the trap were
removed.

Radiotrackina

1. Four adult Colorado pikeminnow (total lengths: 767, 719. 682.
594). captured in the lower Gunnison River downstream of
Redlands Diversion Dam, were implanted with LOTEK@ radiotags
between 18 May and 22 June 1998. These fish were then
translocated and stocked upstream in the Gunnison River.
Three fish were released at Whitewater (river mile 14.7) and
one at Bridgeport (river mile 29.3). This was conducted to
determine 1) the fate of Colorado pikeminnow that had passed
through the fish ladder and released upstream of the
diversion dam, and 2) if these radiotagged fish would lead us
to sites upstream where other pikeminnow may be spawning.

CAp.4B.4
