Because
the Colorado RivN Water
Quality Improvement Pro-
gram is only one part of the
water resou rces manage-
ment of the Colorado River
Basin, additional salinity
control efforts may be
needed to meet the long-
term objective of removing
2.8 million tons annually.

Proper design of water de-
veiopment projects and im-
plementation of State and
local salinity control meas-
ures are vitai to management
of water supply and water
quality in the basin.

Las Vegas Wash as it enters
Lake Mead

o u.s. GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE: 1978-778-233/134 REGION NO.8

The Future

Future consumptive use of
water will have the most
direct impacts on river salin-
ity. As a general rule, for
each 10,000 acre-feet of
water removed from the
upper river system, or for
every 10,000 tons of salt
loading. the salinity at Im-
perial Dam will increase
about 1 mg/L under present
or near-term conditions.

Future program efforts wil
emphasize early completic
of cost-effective unit con-
trols.
