Outstandingly remarkable historical or

prehLstorLcal resources near the river may contribute to its eligibility

for designation under the National System.

Although several portions of the Routt National Forest, through

which the Elk River flows, have been surveyed for historical and pre-

historical resources under the auspices of the State Historical Society

of COlora.do/Office of the State Archaeologist and the U. S. ~'orest Ser--

vice, no remarkable resources have been located. It should 00 not.ed,

however, that these surveys have been related to proposed timber sales

and thus have not included areas most topographically suited for habL-

tation, historical or prehistorical; further, none of the surveys has

been within the study area of the Elk River.

The Public Service Comrany of Colorado has had an archaeological

survey made in the area of their proposed Hinman Park project, which lies

in the study area (Morris and Marcotte, 1975), The Laboratory of Public

Archaeology, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, conducted the survey,
