o
c-
~,
t},,;
c

24. Max1Jaum creditable space as tabulated 1n the preceding
paragraph, excepting lake Powell space, \l8S derived for each reservoir
by subtracting normal releases from inflow values based on a Januar,y-
July inflow forecast to Lake Mead of 20,000,000 acre-feet. This is
the miDiDlUlll forecast requiring flood releases frOJll Lake Mead. Addi-
tional infoI'IIIBtion on III8X1mum creditable space is contained in the
fol.l.owing SUbparagraphs:

a. Lake Powell lD8x1JIIWD storage space, if no space were
avail.lLble upstre8l/l, would be 5,350,000 acre-feet (1 January D18x1mUID
Lake Mead required space) III1nus 1,500,000 acre-feet (Lake Mead III1n1/llwn
required space) or 3,850,000 acre-feet.

b. Navajo D18x1mUJD storage space is the total active space,
1,036,J.OO acre-feet.

c. Blue Mesa D18x1mu1l1 storage space is also the total active
space, 748,500 acre-feet.

d. Flaming Gorge _ldJIIWD storage space \l8S computed by de-
ducting from the expected JanUli1ry - July inflow of 2,180,000 acre-
feet (assUlll1ng the inflow forecast to Lake Mead 18 20,000,000 acre-
feet) the expected January - July outflow of 672,800 acre-feet resulting
in 1,507,200 acre-feet.

e. During the period 1 January to 1 August, when operations
depend on inflow forecasts to Lake Mead, the amount of creditable
storage space at Navajo, Blue Mesa, and Flam.1ng Gorge depends on in-
dividual inflow forecasts. MioimUID forecasts are used so that the
space will be fUled 19 times out of 20. This space is as dependable
as space in Lake Mead, which is controlled io accordance with an inflow
forecast that will be e:xceeded 1 time in 20.

25. 1 January to 1 August releases. --For the period 1 January to
1 AuguIlt, 1111n1mum releases frolll Hoover Dam to attain the I August flood-
control space of 1,500,000 acre-feet are determined frolll tables 1 through
6 of Appendi:x A for various conditions of available flood-control storage
space in Lakes Mead and Powell and of D18x:1mum forecasted inflow for
Januarl-July , February-July, March-July, etc., respectively. These
tables are computed assWDing the follOWing conditions;

a. The follOWing normal reservoir loss rates were used for
lake Powell and for lake Mead, between the Grand Csnyon gaging station
and Hoover Dam:

\)0 r

9
