District forces (in conjunction with and for the Southern Cali-
fornia Water Company) installed an 8-inch connection to the upper
feeder at College Avenue in Claremont; built an experimental elec-
trolytic water softening plant in the La Verne plant grounds; built
an addition to the Gene camp gue~t house; completed an additional
connection to the upper feeder for delivery to Pasadena at the new
Hastings reservoir in the eastern area of the city: and in~talled
three new valve assemblies in the head works structure at Lake
Mathews.

Small annexations were made to more than half of the constitu-
ents resulting in an increase in area of the Metropolitan Water
District of 10.65 square miles. The Census Bureau provided official
figures for all cities in the District and estimates have been made
of the population in the unincorporated areas. The area, the popu-
lation, and the assessed valuation for 1950-51 of property subject
to taxation for District purposes, of The Metropolitan Water Dis-
trict of Southern California are given in table 1.
