San Rafael River Unit

W
l'V
~ The San Rafael River drains about 1,670 square miles in east central
~ Utah. The river average annual discharge is about 95.000 acre-feet
which carries approximately 190,000 tons of salt. Selective withdrawal
of 75 cfs could remove 90.000 tons resulting in a concentration reduction
of about 8 mg/l at Imperial Dam.

Status of investigations are similar to those on the Price River with a
completion of feasibility scheduled for FY 1978. The tentative plan of
control is diversion of highly concentrated flows for evaporation or
desalting.

Dirty Devil River Unit

The Dity Devil River discharges about 72.000 acre-feet of water and
200,000 tons of dissolved solids into the upper end of Lake Powell
annually. It is estimated that removing 80.000 tons of salt from this
discharge would improve the salinity concentration at Imperial Dam by
8 mg/l.

The collection of basic
plan of control at this
and San Rafael Rivers.
completion in FY 1978.

data which began in FY 1973 is continuing. Although the drainage area is only 350 square miles. the
salt loading is estimated to be 115.000 tons per year of which about
40.000 tons could be removed by selective withdrawal and evaporation or
desalting. The resulting effect at Imperial Dam is a concentration
decrease of 4 mg/l.

Data collection began in 1972 and it includes measurements that will
identify the magnitude and effects of return flows from the irrigated
areas near Cortez. Recently, consideration of mitigation measures for
the Dolores Project has led to the investigation of a possible impound-
ment and evaporation of Mud Creek. a tributary of McElmo Creek. Ap-
praisal estimates indicate that a 9.800 acre-foot reservoir could remove
up to 14.000 tons of salts per year. Feasibility studies for McElmo
Creek Unit are to be completed in fiscal year 1978.

Biq Sandy River Unit

The Big Sandy River contributes approximately 180.000 tons of dissolved

-4-
