:.:>
,..)
co
o

The Bureau of Reclamation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs are
cooperating in the irrigation scheduling and management program. There
are about 2,000 acres on the reservation under irrigation scheduling
this year. The program is to continue through fiscal year 1977 with
Bureau of Reclamation supervision.

Palo Verde Irriqation District Unit

There are about 90.000 acres irrigated in the locally developed district
along the Colorado River in California. The irrigation return flows
from this district are estimated to contribute about 90.000 tons of salt
per year to the river. The combined effect of this program and the
system improvement and management should be a reduction of 23,000 tons
in dissolved solids per year. The corresponding reduction in salinity
concentration at Imperial Dam is 5 mg/l.

The irrigation scheduling service is expected to be applied to 3,000
acres by the end of 1973 and will be expanded to serve 10.000 acres in
1974. The program is proposed for continuation through FY 1977.

Water System Manaqement and Improvement Division

Colorado River Indian Reservation Unit

The water system management and improvement is closely tied to the
irrigation scheduling and management program and the figures quoted in
the previous sections in regard to potential salt loading reductions
are based upon an integrated application of both programs. The feasi-
bility investigations for this unit are scheduled through fiscal year
1976.

Palo Verde Irriqation District Unit

It is proposed to study the feasibility of improving the on-farm unlined
irrigation laterals by lining or replacing them with buried pipe. The
irrigation distribution system is in generally excellent condition.
therefore this study is limited in scope to the on-farm distribution.
This would be a supplement to the irrigation scheduling and management
proposed for this unit. The feasibility investigation is scheduled to
start this fiscal year and be concluded in FY 1975.

Salinity Division

The reach of the Colorado River main stem between Parker Dam and Imperial
Dam exhibits some unexplained high salinity concentrations at times.
especially at low flows. Some data have been collected in an attempt
to identify and quantify the sources of this salt loading. An analysis

-10-
