Water Supply l~e water contributed by the Whitewater subbasin to the Basin water supplieg comes principally from snowmelt runoff on the west end of Grand Mesa and the northeast end of the Uncompahgre Plateau. The scattered tracts of irrigated land in th,is subbasin are furnished irrigation water by diversion from the Gunnison ]liver, Kahnah, Whitewater, Escalant" and East Creeks and other tributaries. Except on Kahnah Creek no large storagto reservoirs have been developed in the subbasin. Most of the runoff originates in the comparatively small part ofci.1edrainage areas above 8,000 or 8,500 feet elevation. In this subbasin. the proportion of a1111ual runoff supplied by s ullIIIler preclipitao.ion is somewhat higher than in the other subbasins, but still is only a minor part of the seasonal total. Estimates of the undepleted water supply of the subbasin are summarized in table 37.
