.

.

.

Preface

The initial set of criteria and list of sensitive areas was provided to
the -upper Colorado River Biological Sub-committee (l~) by Fish and
Wildlife biologists. It was subsequently amended by the UCRBS, and other
data ~e applied to make the present list !lOre catprehensive. The =rent
list is considered a product of the Sub-committee. OUr goal was to ac=ately
and fairly represent the state of =rent knowledge and understanding of
habitat use by Colorado squawfish, humpback chub and razorback sucker. The
focal point of our assesament was the Colorado squawfish. The bonytail was
not extensively treated, for lack of data.
Based upon the assesament of Fish and Wildlife Service, Colorado
Division of Wildlife, and Utah Division of Wildlife Resources data, the
sensitive areas represent geographic habitat usage by rare and endangered
Colorado River fishes. "Confirm=d-use" rreans that rea=ing and observable
activities have beerl documented for a particular life state. On the other
hand. "sus:-..,ected-use" only infers that adequate replication or in-depth
clocuIrentation has not oc=red to date. Many "suspected-use" areas could be
,~'confi.l:m:d" ,after additional research. For Endangered Species Act, cc:::a;>liance,
under Section 7. suspected-and confixned-use areas could be considered
synonyrrous.
It is hoped t.l'lat the following sensitive areas will be adopted by
management agencies, that the list w'...ll remain open to am:ndrnent, and that
it ,Hill fODll the basis for various basin-wide managerrent decisions and plans.
The identification and listing of additional sensitive areas should J:e
accCllplished whenever enough data is amassed to support their inclusion. The
UC?.BS recc::mTl2nds aedi tional research to verify suspected areas as soon as
possible.

Uppe= Colorado River Biological Sub-ccmnittee
November 1984
