Floodway The OoodwBY Is located In the floodplain ad- jacent to the river between the two levees. Lands located outside the floodway are protected trom floods. The ability to control possible floods along the lower Colorado River Is dependent upon the flood.....ay as well as the flood control storage capacities in reservoirs behind storage dams. When flood control storage capacities contain an overabundance of water, Reclamation Is fe. quired to release water. The lloodway is designed to carry these tem- porary overabundances of water. These high flows can occur either as regulated f1oodflows or as nonregulated flows that are created by local flash floods. Maintenance Roads Roads are constructed and maintained on the levees and adjacent to armored banklines. The len'e roads are used to drive to areas where river .....ork is needed. The public also uses these roads to drive to lands and to hunting. fishing. and recreation areas along the river. Ho.....ever. the roads are maintained lor opera- tion and maintenance 01 Reclamation projects and are not maintained up to public roads standards; so while they are open to the public. the public is required to use them at Hs own risk. A dry cut is often ac. complished by using a dredge. River Studies And Reviews The BUreau of Reclamation has ongoing conHtnlction and maintenance acth'Hies up and down the riVer. Periodic reviews and studies of the river reveal sections that need 1m. provement or protection. Reclamation reviews the situa- tion and lists the kinds of work that will improve the hydraulic efficiency of the river.
