USE OF SPRING WATER BY THE POOL

~
...,J
CO Water Rights and Diversion of Water
OJ'

The Pool developed the springs in the Glenwood Springs area starting in 1888. Since then,
the Pool has adjudicated a number of rights to springs in the general area including rights
to the Yampa Spring. Table 1 lists and summarizes the water rights that the Pool holds.

TABLE 1
SUMMARY OF SPRING WATER RIGHTS

Case No.

Snrin!! or Source

Amount

1{16

1548 and W2377-78

81CW415

Mronmo~h Yampa Hot Spring
Hot Springs No. 1 and No.2
Small Yampa Spring

5 cfs Absolute
3.59 cfs Conditional
0.30 cfs Absolute

Total flow of spring water rights owned by the Pool is 8.89 cfs of which 5.3 cfs are absolute.
The Pool also owns a 3.00 cfs water right in the Hot Springs Pipeline. An important spring
for the Pool is the Yampa Spring. It currently supplies hot, mineralized water tQ the Pool's
therapy and main pools. The flow from this spring was adjudicated in 1891 for 5.0 cfs for
bathing, healing, medicinal, heat and other beneficial uses. Water from the spring is used as
shown in the schematic, diagram, (Figure 8), illustrating general flow paths of water as used
by the Pool.

To manage the flow from the Yampa Spring, the Pool constructed a five-foot deep, sixty-foot
diameter cistern at the spring source. The cistern has been fitted with a number of diversion
points by which water can be taken and used by the Pool. Water can be used in the main and
therapy pools either directly or after treatment. The therapy pool can take water directly
from the spring or after the water has been cooled through a heat exchange. The main pool
receives treated water.

Depending on the time of the year, the Pool can take all the spring flow into its pools or it
can take only a portion and return the difference directly to the Colorado River.
