<br />~ <br /> <br />. ~ J0 <br />~t~ ... <br /> <br />OPERATION ANLJ MAINTENANCE <br /> <br />31 <br /> <br />() }Jf~/"Il.[ ion of 111 urn:... reservuir <br />Morris reservoir was operated during the year in accord with <br />the contract entered into October 1, 1945, between the Metropol- <br />itan Water District, the San Gabriel Valley Protective Association, <br />and the Los Angeles County Flood Control District, subject further <br />to a contract between Metropolitan and the United States granting <br />the Navy Department the use of the reservoir for the purpose of <br />research in underwater ordnance. <br />Payments from the Na\')' in the past fiscal year amounted to <br />366 days at $137.00 per day, or $50,142. Payment from the Los <br />Angeles County Flood Control District, in accord with the terms <br />of the contract, was $15,000 for the yeat'. During the fiscal year <br />3327 acre-feet of softened water was released from the upper feeder <br />into the San Gabriel River channel in exchange for San Gabriel <br />River water retained in Morris reservoir to maintain the water <br />level required by the Navy. The total of such releases during the <br />period of operation of Morris reservoir for the benefit of the Navy <br />research program is 6235 acre-feet. <br /> <br />i <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />Opel'a/ion vf the dislrandin/l s?J.'ilc.m <br />During the year the operation, maintenance, and minor con- <br />struction activities of the distribution system including the District <br />portion of the San Diego aqueduct were carried on by an average <br />force of 38 men, exclusive of the softening and filtration plant per- <br />sonnel. Maintenance and operation of reservoirs, the upper feeder, <br />the branch feeders, the laterals to the constituent areas, and the <br />District portion of the San Diego aqueduct were done by small crews <br />- ---Iocated-at--L-a-Verne; -Lake-Mathews;i\fo\'l'is-relJerV6ir;-tIfeOi'ange- <br />~ County reservoirs, Palos Verdes reservoir, San Jacinto reservoir, <br />. and at the north portal of Hollywood tunnel. Included in the regular <br />maintenance activities are systematic patrol of pipe lines and struc- <br />tures, operation of valves, meters, and equipment, minor repairs, <br />painting of metalwork, daily observation of water deliveries, chang- <br />ing of meter charts, and daily collection of samples for analysis to <br />assure delivery of a safe water supply. Construction operations and <br />maintenance of major equipment are performed by two special crews <br />under a superintendent stationed at Lake Mathews and a master <br />mechanic with headquarters at the District shops at La Verne. <br />During the first portion of the fiscal year heavy demands on the <br />distribution system were handled by keeping in close contact with <br />those District constituents requiring fluctuating flows, thereby pro- <br />
