,

-:)

B.

Location

The Dolores Project dam is located on the Dolores River approxi-
mately 10 miles downstream from the town of Dolores, Colorado. The roads
that would be upgraded are described in detail below. A map of tne pro-
posed road system is enclosed.

1. Dolores-Norwood Road

The existing Dolores-Norwood Road (designated FDK 526 and
County Road 31) will be improved between the town of Dolores and tne
intersection with Glade Road, a distance of approximately 17 miles. Fol-
lowing the existing alignment, the road will be widened to 24 feet with a
2-foot shoulder on each side and will involve only minor earth work. Ex-
cessive grades and curves at the Dolores Hill, Bean Canyon, and House
Creek will be reduced where feasible. The first 7.2 miles of ~oad, from
Dolores to House Creek Road, will be paved with asphalt. This section is
being paved in conjunction, with the House Creek Recreation site
development. The remaining 9.8 miles will be gravelled to provide an
all-weather surface. This road will have a'design speed of 4U miles per
hour.

2. Glade Road

The existing Glade road (designated FDR 514) will be im-
proved between the Dolores-Norwood and Ferris Road including the construc-
tion of new bridges over Calf Creek and Plateau Creek. The first b.O
miles from the intersection with the Dolores-Norwood Koad will be improved
by widening the road, straightening some curves, and reducing $ome of the
grades. The existing alignment will be followed closely where possible,
but some earthwork will be needed. The remaining 3.5 miles will only be
widened, exactly following the existing alignment. The entire road will
have a width of 20 feet with 2-foot shoulders, an all-weather gravel
surface, and a design speed of 30 miles per hour.

3. Lone Dome Road

The existing Lone Dome Road (designated FUR 504 and County
Road 28) will be improved from Bradfield Bridge to tne McPhee Dam Site, a
distance of about 12 miles. Lone Dome Road is presently very narrow with
sharp curves. The improved road will be constructed on approximately the
same alignment with some of the curves straightened and graces reduced,
which would, therefore require major earthwork. Lone Dome Road will be 20
feet wide with 2-foot shoulders and will have an all-weather gravel sur-
face and a design speed of 30 miles per hour. Since this road runs along
the Dolores River, riprap will be needed in a few minor areas to protect
the road from high water and to straighten a few curves. The road 1m-
provements will be carried out in compliance with the Clean Water Act.
Bank protection and stabilization adjacent to the road will be in compli-
ance with the nationwide permit. The sites to De stabilized are less than
500 ft. in length and the fill deposited below the high water mark will
not exceed one cubic yard per linear feet of river bank. An ind1vidual
404 permit will be obtained for all fill deposited for curve
straightening.

2
