;:..
,..,.
:~':}~

ABSTRACT

h

.,

l\)
~ This r~port describes the progress towards applying stochastic
~ hydrolqgy techniques for use in planning studies for the USBR.
"-" The metho.;ls used to define and model flow and water quality time
series'are detailed. Techniques used to extract coefficients for
time s,ries representation and the procedure for synthesizing
stocha$tic data from them are explained.

The da~aana1ysis and synthesis procedures have been applied to
stream~lows at major gaging stations in the Colorado River Basin.
The co~fficients resulting from analysis of historic data are
documehted. Adjustments and refinements needed to produce a con-
sistent data set are discussed.

"

"

w,,:\

Sever~l comparisons are made to illustrate the agreement between
synthdtic and historic data. Tables and graphs showing specific
numer~cal results are presented. A list of recommendations for
further refinement of stochastic hydrology applications for USBR
purpo_es is given,

This ~eport represents an updated version of an earlier report of
the s,me title issued July 1974 and authored by John D. Hendrick
and Albert E. Gibbs. As a result, much of the material in this
repor~ is taken directly from that report with little or no revi-
sions~ Mowever, in the intervening time since the July 1974
versi9n, substantial gains in knowledge have been made. This
along;with the numerous changes to the basic data has led to the
conclhsion that a new report was required. This report has two
objec~ives: ,first to provide a readily available source containing
the p~e~ent data set and second to set down recommendations for
improying the data generation techniques. No attempt will be made
to du,\:>1icate all of the supporting material in the July 1974 report.

Descriptors - /*synthetic hydrology /streamf1ow/ water qua1ity/
projdct planning/ analytical techni~uesl synthesisl tUne series
analysis/ water utilizationl reservoir operation

IdenUifiers - I*Co1orado River Basin

f,
,
..~
~,
:~

~
~
.:'
:i
.,
,

v

!l

.i~'t'~'(,1
,~~r~~
'1"(;<'1
t~~
~~t~;~
~f:.,;i
,~;t~,~
;k~';~t~

",.;"

.
