Woodward.CIyde Consultants

OQ90

.

III. MATERIALS AND DESIGN PARAMETERS

1. General

The drill hole and laboratory data for the foundation and

embankment materials which were made available by the Bureau

are included in the list of data and documents received from

them (Appendix A). These were closely studied. Included was a

table entitled "Narrows Dam - Table of Stability Parameters,"

which is included in this report as Table 1. After studying

all of the materials information we developed our own

parameters and materials descriptions for use in our stability

and other considerations. Some of these were different from

those developed by the Bureau. Our descriptions and values are

shown on Table 2, "Narrows Dam - Table of Stability Parameters

used by Woodward-Clyde Consultants."

The permeability data for the Zone 1 and Zone 2 embankment

materials (included in Table 2) were obtained from the Bureau

Report EM-221 dated January 12, 1950 for the appropriate "T"

(Zone 1), 'X," "X-West" and "X-Southwest" (Zone 2) borrow

areas.

2. Zone 1

The impervious zone, Zone 1, materials were designated to

be obtained from Borrow Area T on the left side of the

reservoir area. In the Bureau's table of Stability Parameters

(see Table 1) for the Narrows site the materials were

classified as lean clay {eLl with 40% sand and gravel. We

l

.

,

.

,

.

- 11 -

t

~
