The subdiVision
consists of approximately 20 residences and is located iri Section 14, T35N, R7W,
roughly five'miles north of Bayfield in La Plata County, Colorado.

The Team Was composed of federal, tribal, state, and county organizations and other
interested parties, and was divided into four subcommittees; . safety, water quality,
environmental, and geological and reservoir engineering. The members solicited to
participate on the Team had experience in dealing with the issues of each
subcommittee.

Members ofthe oil and gas industry were not invited to participate as formal members
of the Team due to the perception of a possible conflict of interest in determining the
cause of the. increased methane seeps.

This report dOcuments the findings of the Team.

INTRODUCTION

In August of 1993, a resident of the Pine River Ranches Subdivision notified Amoco
Production Company and the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission
(COGCC) concerning gas contamination of his water well. At that time, both Amoco
and the COGCC began investigating the source of this gas. Amoco participated in the
investigation $t this point because they were the only gas well ope.rator within a two
mile radius.

The residenf reported that his water well produced gas when the submersible pump
was activated. His water well was only 34 feet deep and had been producing gas-free
water for ten years. Also, gas bubbles were reported forming in the Pine River,

1

"-. :j
.
.. ",1

- ., ,i.t-L-}
,i" ~:;!
