The conference called together experts from
biology, technology, law, and the social sciences in an attempt to obtain
critical review of the draft report. Although the hypothetical situations
are not included in this final report, they served an integral role within
the dynamics of the conference by acting as a stimulus for discussion and
interchange of knowledge and oplnlons.
The conference had three major objectives:
1. To explore the kinds of information which will be required if
prospective fish and wildlife impacts are to receive appropri-
ate consideration in decision-making concerning Western water
allocation over the next decade.
2. To evaluate the extent to which that information is available.
3. 10 suggest specific research opportunities.
The conference sought to provide an atmosphere in which an exchange
of ideas and information between widely diverse disciplines could occur. By
including both research producers and research users, it was hoped that
perspectives would be broadened and suggestions for specific research needs
would be both more innovative and useful than otherwise possible.
Additional critical reviews of the draft report were submitted by
about two dozen persons. Their reviews, together with the comments and
suggestions offered at the research conference, were employed to rewrite the
entire report.

5

~ :.1
. .

;C(~:"::!'~i?::~t~;':~;::.>;:<';

'1

"!

.:.~.
