Pro'ect Ooeration
License applications (including this application) have been
filed with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)
for six projects within the Uncompahgre Valley Irrigation
Project. Five of these projects are located on the South
Canal. The sixth is located at Shavano Falls on the
Montrose and Delta Canal (M&D Canal). Each of the six
projects is located at existing drops in the canal system,
and will consist of temporary diversion of the flow from the
canal through a turbine in a new powerhouse, with the water

returned to the canal a short distance downstream.

Photographs of the project site are given in Appendix I.

At the present time, flow is diverted from the Gunnison
River through the Gunnison Tunnel and into the South Canal
only during the 7 month irrigation season. Under the pro-
posed hydroelectric developments, flow will be diverted from
the Gunnison River for up to 12 months per year, depending
on canal maintenance requirements.

B.
