study area boundaries,

31 historic and 18

prehistoric

sites

were recorded.

The Uncompahgre Project

canals are

among the historic sites.

The Colorado State Historic

Preservation Officer has determined that the Delta and Hon-

I

trose,

and South Canals are eligible to the National Regis-

I

ter of Historic Places under Criterion "A".

The Delta and

Hontrose Canal is one of the oldest canals in the Montrose

I

area and one of the first to be financed

by

the private

sector.

The South Canal is associated with the Gunnison

I

Tunnel and it supplies the major portion of water for irri-

I

gation to the Uncompahgre Valley.

I

Three sites with_~ the study area are listed on the National

Register of Historic Places.

The Ute Hemorial site, located

I

just south of Hontrose,

commemorates the last days of the

Ute Indians

in western Colorado.

The Gunnison Tunnel,

I

representing a landmark in civil engineering, was construct-

I

ed as part of the Uncompahgre Project in 1909.
