Hi5torial AnQ Archaeolo~ical <br /> <br />ColO1'ado State University completed a cultural resource su'r- <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />vey of the Lower Gunnison Basin Unit area in 1981. <br /> <br />Within <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />the <br /> <br />study area boundaries, <br /> <br />31 historic and 18 <br /> <br />prehistoric <br /> <br />sites <br /> <br />were recorded. <br /> <br />The Uncompahgre Project <br /> <br />canals are <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />among the historic sites. <br /> <br />The Colorado State Historic <br /> <br />Preservation Officer has determined that the Delta and Hon- <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />trose, <br /> <br />and South Canals are eligible to the National Regis- <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />ter of Historic Places under Criterion "A". <br /> <br />The Delta and <br /> <br />Hontrose Canal is one of the oldest canals in the Montrose <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />area and one of the first to be financed <br /> <br />by <br /> <br />the private <br /> <br />sector. <br /> <br />The South Canal is associated with the Gunnison <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Tunnel and it supplies the major portion of water for irri- <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />gation to the Uncompahgre Valley. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Three sites with_~ the study area are listed on the National <br /> <br />Register of Historic Places. <br /> <br />The Ute Hemorial site, located <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />just south of Hontrose, <br /> <br />commemorates the last days of the <br /> <br />Ute Indians <br /> <br />in western Colorado. <br /> <br />The Gunnison Tunnel, <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />representing a landmark in civil engineering, was construct- <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />ed as part of the Uncompahgre Project in 1909. <br /> <br />The T. <br /> <br />B. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Townsend House, located in Montrose, was constructed in 1888 <br />1 <br />and has undergone alrrost no exterior alterations. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />E-27 <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br />
