In anticipation of completion of the
DalTas Creek Project, the Tri-County Water Conservancy Dis-
trict, under a contract of May 1967, gave the City or
Montrose the right to purchase some of the District's inter-
im water supply from the Uncompahgre Valley Water Users
Association. In return for the right, Montrose provides
storage regulation and treatment of the district's entire
supply from the Association. The storage regulation is pro-
vided by Fairview Reservoir located adjacent to the South
Canal about 1-1/2 miles from the outlet of the Gunnison Tun-
nel. The ~imarron River supply plus the supplemental supply
from the Tri-County System fall short of meeting the city's
municipal vater needs; however, water will be available to
1
the community from the Dallas ~reek Project.

F. VeRetation
Historically, vegetation in the study area was generally
limited to desert shrub types, consisting or saltbush at
lower elevations and sagebrush at higher elevations. Around

the fringes of the valley, pinyon-juniper woodlands were

found. Along the Gunnison and Uncompahgre Rivers and their

major tributaries, riparian vegetation occurred as bands of

cottonwood trees, willows, grasses, and other species with
1
high water requirements.

E-111
