from all types of summer weather systems. The number of
thunderstorm events, which evidence the frequency of
strong convective or cumulus activity, normally range from
30 to 45 during the 6-month season. From this climatological
background and experience at field experiments and opera-
tional projects, an estimated 30 to 40 days with cumulus
clouds suitable for modification can be expected in a
typical season. Within the core area (10,000 to 15,000
square miles) about 60 to 120 cumulus clouds should be
effectively measured and analyzed in a field season.
Depending on local needs and decisions, an average of
about half these clouds will be randomly seeded. Addi-
tional clouds will be studied and treated within radar
range but outside the core measurement area.

Within the planned 5-year field experiment duration, the
following number of cloud test cases should be obtained

and analyzed:
One field area 300 to 600 clouds
Two field areas 600 to 1,200 clouds
Three field areas 900 to 1,800 clouds
Four field areas 1,200 to 2,400 clouds
Needed 1,000 to 1,500 clouds

This indicates at least two field areas and, under minimum

weather conditions, three or four areas may be needed to

24
