Annual Report For 1970

Superintendent's Report

To

The Amity Mutual Irrigation Company

TO THE DIRECTORS AND STOCKHOLDERS:

Gentlemen:

The following statements covering the operation and maintenance of
The Amity Mutual Irrigation Company. its canals and reservoir system, are
submitted for your consideration.

AMITY CANAL

At the begirming or ilie 1970 season the water supply aooeared to be
adequate for the early months but showed signs of being short later, OVer
54,000 acre feet was stored in John Martin, and 73,000 acre Ceet was in
our Great Plains Reservoirs. Snows in late March and rain in early April
caused the Amity to hold off call for water until April 20, Repairs had to
be made at Wile~y Drain Spill wa~' and water was started for farmer use on
Aprl1 27. John Martin became empty on May 28, but river now held up very
well. This diversion, plus supplemental water from Great Plains Reser-
voirs, provided Amity Irrigators with one of the best water years in the
Canal's history. Farmers received water practically on demand and a total
of 68 days of "free" water was rWl in the period of April through OCtober.
Mter November 1 it was decided to make use of a provision in the
Colo.-Kansas Compact which allows winter use of up to 100 cfs of river flow.
The Amity has been able to divert 70 to 95 cis of river water for irrigation
use. Problems with weeds and ice have been experienced because of the low
flowt but these have been successfully overcome by the diligent work of
your Ditchriders and Equipment Operators. Winter water is much more
difficult to handle, especially with low flows, but many Stockholders have
benefitted from its use.
Heavy rain in the Wiley-Kornman area caused 2 breaks in the Canal
northwest of Lamar on July 11. These were repaired sufficiently to allow
diversion of water by July 15, They were completely repaired by July 19,
Restrictions on use of 2,45-T spray have curtailed our Willow
l:Ipraying. Some use was made of 2,4D but it is not very effective. Use c1
the diesel weed burner is limited to small areas. Investigation of other
types of spray is being made.
More trees were removed from the Lamar Division during the winter
of 1969-70. Use of winter water has cut down on this work in 1970-71,
Curves and bogs were cleaned along the Canal during the season. Some re-
pair work was made to Company houses.

Page 16
