A reduction in total requirements for storage for streamflow
regulation for water' quality control could be expected if full
consideration is given to reducing the total load of dissolved
solids ,on the ,Uncompahgre River caused by present and future
irrigation projects in the area. .Among other possibilities, such
reduction may result from improved farm management practices as
well as removing small areas that may be producing a large part
of the salt load., A study of the means for reducing the salt
loading on the Uncompahgre River during advanced ,planning of the
Dallas Creek Project is recommended. As stated in Public Law 660,
as amended, "any such storage and water releases shall not be
provided, aS,a substitute fqr ~dequate treatment or other methods
of controlling waste at the source." If such control is feasible,
it will have economic benefits, not only in the Uncompahgre River,
but also for downstream water users.

32
