Wellton-Mohawk Irrigation and Drainage District

Diversion and distribution works in the Wellton-Mohawk
project which were completed by the Bureau of Reclama-
tion in 1952 were constructed to serve the membership of
the Wellton-Mohawk Irrigation and Drainage District
(hereinafter the district), an irrigation district organized
and existing under the laws of the state of Arizona. The
original repayment contract entered into between the
United States through the Department of the Interior and
the district on March 4, 1952, provides for the delivery to
the district of a supply of water as may be reasonably
required for the irrigation of up to 75,000 acres. In addi-
tion to providing for t)le construction of carriage and
distribution works, the repayment contract provided that
an amount of $1,011,600 might be expended by the United
States for construction of drainage facilities. Article
7(a)(iv) of the repayment contract of March 4, 1952,
provides that the construction of drainage facilities shall
be subject to agreement in writing of the Board of Directors
of the district.

Because of conditions prevailing in the Wellton-Mohawk
project due to rising groundwater, the repayment contract
was amended on September 1, 1959, with the approval of
district officials to provide for the expenditure of addi-
tional sums in the construction of a drainage system!"

18 Design of the drainage canal was approved by the Board of Directors
of the district at a meoting with offic.ials of the Bureau of Reclamation on
November 13, 19'58.
