The Metropolitan Aqueduct from the Colorado River is the largest domestic water
supply line in the United States. It was built and is operated by the Metropolitan Water
District of Southern California. The Metropolitan Water District was organized in 1928,
with 11 cities voting to join in a program to bring an urgently needed Colorado River water
supply to Southern California.

By 1955, there were 66 incorporated cities
within the DiStrict, in addition to large unincor-
porated areas. More than 6,000,000 people live
within the District boundaries and are e1igibk: co
be served with Colorado River water

The mighty rask of building the aqueduct was
launched in December, 1932, and work was com-
pleted in ics initial development nine years lacer,
in 1941. Its initial COSt was about $200,000,000.
In 1955 it represented a total invescment in excl'SS
of $270,000,000. From its Intake pumping plant
on the Colorado River, twO miles upstream from
Parker Dam, water is carried across the emirl'
srate of California.

To keep pace with the rapidly growing watcr

requirements of Southern California, the Metro,
poliran Water District has under way an
$SO,OOO,OOO cxpansion program. This work is
scheduled for completIOn In 1956.

Principal construction features of the District's
program include the installation of three additional
pumps in each of the five large pumping stations
along the main aqueduct; the laying of J 12 miles
of pipe for extensions to the distribLltion system
serving the cities and areas of the District; and
the building of a reservoir of ] ,500 acre-teet
capacity in the Monterey Park area east of Los
Angeles. A "second barrel" addition to the aque-
duct line serving the San Diego area is one of
the largest single projects in the building program.

NO FEDERAL SUBSIDY
All costs of the Metropolitan Water District aqueduct are paid for by those who live within the
District. There is no Federal government subsidy of any kind. This is a Southern California project,
owned, controlled and paid for by the people it serves.

APRil 1955

()f'R?,f,f)

(Above) PARKER DAM, on .he Colorado River, .tore, and regulo'es
,h..
