USBR/MWD SALINITY MANAGEMENT STIJDY
FINAL REPORT

.

w
en
t<,
C)

1. Inability to cycle storage without conflicting with recreational and fishery interests'
desire for a stable water surface elevation, and

2. Inability to redirect nearby Santa Ana Valley Pipeline flows through the reservoir
without losing power generation revenue from bypassing the Perris Power Plant.

To deal with these problems, a Metropolitan task force is working with concerned
recreational and fishery interests on reservoir cycling operations at Perris. Metropolitan has
also implemented some limited flow-through operations (power plant bypass) to flush salts
from the reservoir. Since the Perris Power Plant provides about $1 million in annual revenue, 00
additional assessment of the costs and benefits of bypassing the power plant are being
incorporated into the discussions.

Figure 3-10

Salinity at Lake Perris

500

. 400
::r
e;,
S.
<II
C 300
t-

200 -
<Xl '" 0 a; '" '" ... on CD r-- <Xl
<Xl <Xl '" '" '" '" '" '" '" '"
'" '" '" '" '" '" '" '" '" '" '"
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
-~,~.-

COLORADO RIVER WATER AND AGRICULTURAL DRAINAGE DESALTING

Three options to reduce CRA salinity levels through desalination were evaluated at the

conceptual level. Two of the options desalt aqueduct water. The other option desalts
agricultural drainage water from the Imperial Valley or Coachella Valley and places the
product water into the CRA to dilute salinity concentrations.

.

BOOKMAN-EDMONSTON
ENGINEERING, INC. 3-15
0:\LOCALRESIANDYSISAlfNITY\JUNE9B-2\7SECT3.DOC 0712019B 10:59 AM

Section 3
Evaluation of Potential Regional
Salinity Management Strategies

M

'0 .

;li.~>~
