Rick's Remarks
By: Rick Gold
Deputy Regional Director

It's hard to heliev6-this is the last newsletter
we will produce to share information on the
development of the Environmental Impact
Statement on the Operation of the Glen
Canyon Dam. This is the ninth such edition
of the letter.

I took the time to look back at the previous
editions, which has given me a renewed
perspective of the job and also this
communication process.

I remember writing in the first edition, in
June 1990, that the newsletter would give me
the opportunity to help set the tone for the
coming work. I also stressed that we would
be fair and balanced, that each resource
would be recognized and treated carefully and
purposefully, and that we needed the
cooperation and constructive help of many
individuals to accomplish the job.

2

Now, as I look back, I honestly believe that
through the efforts of all of you, working as
individuals and groups, we have succeeded in
conducting a professional process and,
cooperatively, producing an excellent EIS.

We have seen a coming together of diversity
for a common goal--the protection of the
Grand Canyon's resources. Federal and State
agencies, Native American tribes, power
users, environmentalists, recreation industry
interests, and private individuals have all
worked to achieve this fina1 EIS.

You all have proved that public involvement
has significant value in the decisionmaking
process.

To all of you, I offer my heartfelt thanks.
This has been the experience of a lifetime.
