The cost of <br />the expansion to June :30, 1949 waR $3,597,427.77. The work is <br />scheduled to be completed in August 1949, at a total cost of approxi- <br />mate]y $4,000,000. <br />The average number of contractors' men working during the year <br />was 216 with a maximum of 304 on November 4, 1948. The District <br />force assigned to the work averaged 16, varying from 20 at the <br />first of the yearto 11 on June 30, 1949. <br /> <br />West Basin feede,', Schedules !,8P "",I44P <br /> <br />After the annexation of the West Basin Municipal Water District <br />on .J uly 23, 1948, the Board of Directors authorized the construction <br />of a feeder line to connect with the Palos Verdes feeder to serve <br />the \.arious cities and agencies comprising the West Basin District. <br />A contract was awarded on December 17" 1948 to the United Con- <br />crete Pipe Corporation at a contract price of $1,247,3,W.20, for the <br />construction of the 6.84-mile pipe line. The contractor started work <br />on .January 17, 1949. and at the end of the fiscal year the construe. <br />tion was two-t.hirds completed. <br />The West Basin feeder begins at Avalon and Redondo Beach <br />Boulevards. where it joins the 51-inch steel pipe of the Palos Verdes <br />feeder. The line extends westerly along Redondo Beach Bou]evard <br />to Arlington Sh'eet and then west on Manhattan Beach Boulevard to <br />its terminus at Center Street and Redondo Avenue in the City of <br />Manhattan Beach. The feeder will be 36.120 feet in length consist- <br />ing of 45-inch inside diameter, 16-foot long, precast concrete pipe <br />sections with a 51/~-inch shell and reinforced with a steel cylinder <br />and inner and outer cages of bar reinforcement. Lock joints with <br />rubbe.r gaskets are being uoed with additional welding of the joint <br />rings at a few locations where tensile stresses may be developed. <br />Flow of water in the pipe line will be measured and controlled by <br />a venturi tube and flow meter and valve located near the connection <br />with the Palos Verdes feeder and housed in an underground con- <br />crete structure. Five service connections are being provided as <br />follows: At Normandie Avenue for the Southern California Water <br />Company; at Inglewood Avenue for the Southern California Water <br />Company and the California Water Service Company; and at the <br />end of the feeder for the cities of El Segundo and Manhattan Beach <br />and for the California Water Service Company. Also an inter- <br />connection will be constructed at Normandie Avenue to the Harbor <br />
