<br />\ <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br />! <br /> <br />.- r .' ,~. <br />~~.J l <br /> <br />CHAPTER 5 <br /> <br />CONSTRUCTION <br /> <br />CONTRACT construction work during the fiscal year 1948-49 <br />consisted of the continuation of the work on the first cxpan- <br />sion of the softening and filtration plant and the construction <br />of the West Basin feeder to serve the newly annexed West Basin <br />Municipal Water District. Contracts were awarded for the con- <br />,;tl'llction of a ]ateral to serve the City of San Marino and the <br />Victoria Street lateral to serve Compton and Long Beach. In <br />addition District forces constructed severa] new service connections. <br /> <br />E")l(fIlSiOll No.1 of the softening and jiltmtion plant <br /> <br />In the preceding annual report, the construction of additional <br />facilities to increase the capacity of the w"ter softening and filtra- <br />tion plant at La Verne from 100 to 200 million gallons per day was <br />outlined up to an estimated completion factor of 20 per cent on <br />June 30. 1948. Work hac! been started by the general contractor, <br />L. E. Dixon Company, on February 11, 194:3 and placing of concrete <br />was about one-fourth completed at the end of the fiscal year 1947-48. <br />The gencral contractor subcontracted many items of the work. <br />The largest of these subcontracts were the plumbing and piping <br />work, the furnishing and placing of reinforcement steel, structural <br />steel, and miscellaneous metalwork, electrical work, earthwork, and <br />painting. L. E. Dixon Company and the subcontractors continued <br />their work steadily throughout the fiscal year to an estimated com- <br />pletion stage of 93 per cent on June 30, 1949. Concrete placing <br />was practically completed with the last major pour on May 27, <br />1949. The only concrete work remaining at the end of the fiscal <br />year included minor features such as curbs, slabs, and finishing <br />work. A total of 21.561 cubic yard,; of concrete had been placed <br />with the largest monthly progress reportcd in July 1948 of 2,937 <br />cubic yards. The installation of piping and mechanical work was <br />about 92 per cent completed. The Link.Belt equipment had all been <br />installed in the mixing and settling basins except for a few minor <br />items in mixing basin No. 0.
