.\

~
I'

" - '--(
'0" .
...~~

QPERATION AND MAINTENANCE

29

westerly boundary of the City of Pasadena. The capacity of the
upper feeder is 750 cubic feet per second to the San Dimas turnout
and 510 cubic feet per second from that point to Eagle Rock. Near
La Verne in Los Angeles County the flow of the upper feeder is
diverted at a turnout structure into the water softening and filtra-
tion plant where the water is softened and filtered, and returned
to the upper feeder for distribution to District areas. The City
of Pasadena is supplied directly from the Pasadena tunnel of the
upper feeder through a riser pipe at Mountain Street and Manza-
nita Avenue. This ri~er is connected to a large city main which
delivers water to near-by Sunset reservoir, A second Pasadena
outlet is provided near the easterly city boundary at Sierra Madre
Villa Avenue. A third connection was made this year for Pasadena
at West Drive in the Arroyo Seco. A lateral to serve San Marino
was under construction at the end of the year.
There are at present three main branches extending from the
upper feeder southerly and westerly into the metropolitan area, with
lateralo as required to carry water to the member agencies, The
Orange County branch takes off from the upper feeder at the soft-
ening plant turnout structure and runs in a southerly direction
40.3 miles to connect with the exhting Laguna Beach main supply
line near Corona Del .Mar. Direct connections are made from the
Orange County line to the city systems of Brca and Newpurt Beach,
constituents of Coastal Municipal Water District, and to Fullerton,
Anaheim, and Santa Ana, Two reservoirs on this line, the Orange
County and Corona Del iliaI', with capacities of 200 and 15 acre-feet
respectively, provide storage and flow regulation.
The Palos Verdes branch rum; southerly and westerly from the
Eagle Rock tower 31.0 miles to the Palos Verdes reservoir near
the Los Angeles-Long Beach harbor area, Ele\'en connections, in-
cluding a short lateral to Ascot reservoir, have thus far been made
from this line to the Los Angeles city water system, Laterals were
built by the District to provide delivery to the cities of Compton,
Long Beach, and Torrance, and three direct connections were made
this fiscal year for constituents of the West Basin Mllllicipal Water
District. A lateral for delivery to the central area of the West
Basin District is under construction, and a contract has been award-
ed for construction of an additional lateral to serve Long Beach
and Compton, The water level in Palos Verdes reservoir with a
capacity of 1,000 acre-feet, varies between a maximum elevation
of 320 feet and a minimum of 270. Backtlow is available to supply
