<br />w <br />OJ <br />c.o <br />~ <br /> <br />As the Nation's principal conservation agency, the Department of the <br />Interior h~s responsibility for most of our nationally owned public lands <br />and natural resources. This includes fostering the wisest use of our land <br />and water r,esources, protecting our fish and wildlife, preserving the <br />environmental and cultural values of our national parks and historical <br />places, and providing for the enjoyment of life through outdoor recreation. <br />The Department assesses our energy and mineral resources and works to <br />assure that their development is in the best interest of all our people. <br />The Department also has a major responsibility for American Indian reser- <br />vation communities and for people who live in Island Territories under <br />U.S. administration. <br /> <br />Nothing in,this study is intended to interpret the provisions of the <br />Colorado Rf'ver Compact (45 Stat. 1057), the Upper Colorado River Basin <br />Compact (63 Stat. 31), the Water Treaty of 1944 with the United Mexican <br />States (Treaty Series 994, 59 Stat. 1219), the decree entered by the <br />Supreme Court of the United States in Arizona vs. California, et al. <br />(376 U.S. 340), the Boulder Canyon Project Act (45 Stat. 1057), the Boulder <br />Canyon Project Adjustment Act (54 Stat. 774; 43 U.S.C. 618a), the Colorado <br />River Storage Project Act (70 Stat. 105; 43 U.S.C. 620), the Colorado River <br />Basin Project Act (82 Stat. 885; 43 U.S.C 1501), or the Colorado River <br />Basin Salinity Control Act (88 Slat. 266). <br /> <br /> <br />1. <br /> <br />1 <br />:; . - :~ '''.'
