.

.

.

EXISTING FACILITIES - eRSP NAVA..,IO UNIT. NAVA..JO RESERVOIR <CONTINUED)

3

fish and minimum releases of300 cfs to sustain the downstream trout
fishery could only be made from Navajo Dam about 35% of the time.
Again, a large portion of the water to meet the endangered fish
requirement is water that would be released in anticipation of spills and
would not be available from storage.

. The Navajo Nation's water rights in the San Juan River Basin of
New Mexico have not been quantified. The Nation has requested that
Reclamation should refrain from executing new contracts or extending
existing contracts for water from Navajo Reservoir until it is determined
that water will be available for the NIIP,

D. Capability for enlarging storage capacity:

.

Hydrologic studies are underway in the San Juan Basin to more accurately
define the water supply available to Navajo Reservoir as well as the water
supply available in the rest of the basin. Until these studies are complete,
the potential for enlarging Navajo Reservoir can not be determined,

E. Assessment of whether water conservation measures, other efficiency measures,
or operational changes could make water available:

Note: Opportunities for water conservation on the Hammond Project are
addressed in the Hammond Project section.

I) Opportunities for "saving" water:

. The NIIP is a lined canal/pipe lateral/sprinkler irrigation system that is
still under construction. Improvements to the delivery system are not
needed, However, institution of an irrigation scheduling system may
reduce operational losses,

2) How much:

. The amount of water that could be "saved" through more efficient
irrigation scheduling on the NIIP is unknown.

3) When:

u 1/10/97 - PRELIMINARY - SUB.JECT To REVfSION - FOR DISCUSSION PURPOSES ONLY"
