o
,.;l
~ evaporation pond site. Topographic and route surveys of the geyser
~ area, evaporation pond sites, pipeline and access road routes will
en be obtained and maps prepared. Right-of-way studies will be
~ initiated and additional discharge measurements of the geyser made.
An EIS data gathering contract will be negotiated and comments from
the cooperative agencies (Fish and Wildlife, Public Health,
Recreational agencies, EPA, etc.) will be requested, designs and
estimates will be finalized, an EISsupplement prepared and a definite
plan report written.

The fourth authorized project is Las Vegas Wash, .which serves as a
surface drain for all domestic, municipal and industrial wastewaters
from Las Vegas Valley. The average annual discharge from the wash
to Lake Mead is about 38,000 acre-feet which carries approximately
208,000 tons of dissolved solids.

Two options for control of salinity from this source are allowed by
the Act. Both plans of development would collect ground water flows
at a natural "barrier" with a grouted curtain wall and a series of
perforated pipes. The collected discharges would be either pumped
to.a nearby reverse osmosis desalting plant or to evaporation ponds
for total solar evaporation. Manmade surface flows in the wash
would be diverted and conveyed around the ground water collection
site. It is estimated that the Las Vegas Wash control could remove
138,000 tons of salt per year from the Colorado River system.

The work scheduled in FY 1975 will include the initiation of a public
involvement program, a literature research, an archeological assess-
ment of the project area, environmental studies, field engineering
and location surveys, hydrologic and land use studies, geologic and
geophysical studies, geologic exploration and foundation drilling,
preparation of designs and estimates, economic studies and cooperative
programs with Federal, State and local agencies, and the preparation
of reports. These studies and programs are scheduled to be completed
in FY 1976 with the definite plan report and the draft of the
environmental impact statement scheduled in June 1976.

The expedited completion of planning reports which the Act authorizes
and directs are those for units described in the Secretary of the
Interior's report, "Colorado River Water Quality Improvement Program,
February 1972." These units are divided into three categories:
irrigation sources, point sources and diffuse sources.

Irrigation sources in this category are: Palo Verde Irrigation
District, Colorado River Indian Reservation, Uinta Basin Irrigation
and Lower Gunnison Basin irrigation.
