c
,...
'-
~
-
>
c:

BUREAU OF RECLAMATION REPORT

Introduction

The La Barge project is planned to divert water from the Green
River, principal tributary of the Colorado River, for the irrigation
of desert lands in southwestern WYoming. The project is among the
first developments recommended by States of the Upper Colorado River
Basin for participation in the benefits and revenues of the Colorado
River storage project, the master project in a broad plan to obtain
the fullest possible development of the land and water resources in
the Upper Colorado River Basin. Additional information on the relation
of the La Barge project to the storage project and over-all basin devel-
opment is given in the Bureau of Reclamation report of December 1950,
entitled Colorado River Storage Project ~ Participating Projects.

The La Barge project investigations have been sponsored by the
Bureau of Reclamation. The Fish and Wildlife Service cooperated in the
investigations and is preparing a report on its findings. The National
P~rk Service also participated in the investigations and submitted the
attached memorandum.

During the course of project investigations, helpful data and
services were provided by the Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park
Service, Geological Survey, wYoming State Engineer, wYoming State
Planning and Water Conservation Board, and the University of wYoming.
Individual farmers in neighboring irrigated areas also contributed
helpful information. Free use was made of information in previous
reports related to the project area.

Authority to make this report and supporting investigations is
provided in the Federal reclamation laws (Act of June 17, 1902, 32 Stat.
3BB, and acts amendatory thereof or supplementary thereto, particularly
the Boulder Canyon Project Act, '45 Stat. 1057~ and the Boulder Canyon
Project Adjustment Act, '54 Stat. 744).

General Discussions

The La Barge project area, including an irrigable area of 7,970
acres, is in the Upper Green River Basin. The southern tip of the area
is in Lincoln County, wYo., and the remainder is in Sublette County, wYo.
The project lands are situated along the west side of the Green River in
a long, narrow strip, about 30 miles long and with an average width of
1.5 miles. The lands are at an average elevation of about 6,700 feet
above sea level. They are si too ted between South Piney Creek and La Barge
Creek, tributaries of the Green River.
