-'
r-
~
.....

c:

UNITED STATES
DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR
NATIONAL PARK SERVICE
Region Three
Santa Fe, New Mexico

July 11, 1950

Memorandum

To: Regional Director, Region 4
Bureau of Reclamation

From: Associate Regional Director

Subject: La Barge Diversion, wyoming

'.

During the conference in this office on May 19, Regional
Planning Engineer Reid Jerman suggested that an inspection of La
Barge Diversion site, on the Green River, could be made conveniently
in connection with travel to that part of the valley in connection
with other investigations. Final schedules for the field work out-
lined with Mr. Sias of this offi os by Mr. Jerman in your office on
June 21, confirmed the feasibility of such an inspection, and the
area was visited qy Mr. Sias on June 26, accompanied by Mr. Paul H.
Thomas, Field Engineer, from your Rock Springs office.

The site of the proposed diversion from the Green River in
southwest Sublette County, Wyonling, is a few miles east of the hamlet
of Big Piney on U. S. 189. It is accessible via a fairly good country
road which connects Big Piney with Boulder on U. s. 187.

It is our understanding that it is now proposed to effect
the minor diversion from the Green River by means of control head
gate inlets and that no weir will be required. Even with possible
minor weir facilities, should such prove to be necessary, resulting
river impoundment would undoubtedly be very slight, only moderately
flooding certain meadows on the east bank with a shallow pool.

The terrain on the diversion side rises abruptly from the
river into barren hills, sparsely furnished with semi-desert vegetation.
Except for glimpses of distant mountains, the site has no scenic appeal.

The National Park Service finds that recreational values
would be neither destroyed nor created by developments necessary for
the diversion. No National Park Service area or interest and no
state park would be affected by this reclamation feature.
