f'-
to
~

--

c

BUREAU OF RECLAMATION REPORT

The survey showed a total arable area in need of water of 8,220
acres. Of this land 7,970 acres were considered irrigable, an allow-
ance of 3 percent being nade for rights-of-way such as public roads,
canals, and drains. A comparatively large area of land on the low
terraces and river bottom was not included in the acreage classified
as it receives an ample water supply from Green River. The acreages
incluied in the project are shown by lam class in the following
tabulation.

IRRIGABLE AREA

.,

Nonirrigated Partial _v irri.!!:ated
Percent Percent
Land class Acres of total Acres of total Total
1 700 8.9 120 1.5 I 820
2 5,270 66.1 130 1;6 , 5,400
3 980 12.4 40 0.5 I 1,020
4 74) 8.9 10 0.1 730
Total 7,670 96.3 300 3.7 i 7,970

Unit--Acres

Agricultural Economy

Project lands would generally be utilized for the support of live-
stock enterprises. The settlers would not have access to the range which
is already stocked to cap3.city and thus would be required to nake their
farm unit s self-sustaining. Most of the Class 1 and 2 land and some
Class :3 land would be used for the production of small grains, hay, and
some garden crops. Some of these lands w::>uld also be used for rotational
pasture. Class 4 land would be plant ed to permanent pasture.

In the La Barge area an average farm of about 210 irrigable acres
would provide the farm family with a reasonable standard of living,
provide employment for the available family labor, and permit payment of
operation, maintenance, and replacement costs and a reasonable payment
on project construction costs. The 3,300 acres of privately owned irri-
gable lam would probably be operated in conjunction with existing ranch
lands outside of the La Barge project.

7
