.

00254':

.

about 2,600 at Fort Lupton to a high of about 9,000 at La Junta.

One of the cities, Brighton, has already been caught up in the

creeping Denver metropolitan sprawl. The poorest water supply of

the selected cities is suffered by the citizens of the town of Las

Animas on the Arkansas River. The total dissolved solids of the

municipal water supplies there are about 3,075 ppm, with a total

hardness of about 1,310 parts.

I am sure you are all aware of the great struggle upon the

Colorado River today to maintain a water quality at the International

~oundary with Mexico at or less than 1,000 parts per million. It

is claimed that water of any worse quality is unacceptable for irriga-

tion purposes. I will observe at this point that not only do many

residents of the Arkansas Valley in Colorado successfully irrigate

with water containing in excess of 3,000 ppm, but they also drink

the stuff without apparent adverse effect.

On the South Platte River the situation is somewhat better.

Of the representative communities selected on that river, the city

of Fort Morgan has the poorest water supply, which contains approx-

imately 1,700 ppm of total dissolved solids and approximately 900

parts in total hardness.

All of the selected communities derive their water

supplies from shallow wells in the alluvium of the South Platte and

-4-
