is located in a deep canyon on
Jones Hole Creek near Dinosaur
National Monument in northeast-
ern Utah. Operation began three
years ago. This year's production
of 151,819 pounds of brook, cut-
throat, brown, and rainbow trout
lingerlings is a little more than 50
percent of capacity. If road con-
ditions were improved for year-
round access, then production
could be increased 10 the full ca-
pacity of the hatchery. Most of the
fish are used 10 stock Flammg
Gorge, Fontenelle, and Steinaker
ReservOirs and the Green River
below Flaming Gorge Dam.
2. Hotchkiss National Fish Hatchery
IS located on Ihe North Fork of the
Gunnison near Hotchkiss, Colo-
rado. Its OUlput of 3,021,248 fin-
gerlings and 50,000 larger-sized
rainbow trout went principally for
stocking requirements at Blue
Mesa, Crawford, Lemon, and Sil-
ver Jack Reservoirs in Colorado
and Navajo Reservoir 10 Colorado
and New Mexico.

One natlonal Wildlife refuge and three
waterfowl areas under state adminis-
tration are being developed in connec-
tion with the Colorado River Storage
Project.

1, Seedskadee National Wildlife Ref-
uge hes along the Green River
below Fontenelle Dam, Wyoming.
The land use plan for this area
requires purchase of approxi.

mately 11,900 acres of land to be
used for waterfowl management
purposes in conjunction with ad-
joining publicly owned land Ad-
ministration of acquired and pub-
he lands for wildlife management
purposes began in 1966. Land
purchase negotiations continued
during the year, but no major
structural improvements will be
programed until a suflicient devel-
opment area has been obtained,

2. Browns Park Waterfowl Manage-
ment Area is located below Flam-
ing Gorge Reservoir on the Green
River in the vicinity of the Utah-
Colorado State hne. Management
area headquarters have been
completed, and 270 acres of im-
pounded water and related water-
lowl food plots have been devel-
oped at two major sites. Work
continued at the third site to devel-
op an additional 120 acres 01
pond-marsh habitat for waterfowl
together with an expansion of the
acreage 01 wildlife food plots. The
overall management area is al-
ready attracting appreciable num-
bers of resident and migratory
game bird populations and is in-
creasing in public popularity both
as a fishing and hunting site.
3. Miller Mesa Waterfowl Area is
located on the west shore of the
Navajo Reservoir just south of the
Colorado-New Mexico State line.
A small reservoir and two terrace

ponds have been completed and
are full. About 170 acres Of agri-
cultural land have been plan led
lor wildlife management purposes
to barley, oats, wheat, and alfalfa.
The area has not yet been opened
to hunting. Waterfowl use patterns
indicate that birds Irom other ag-
ricultural and restlOg areas in the
San Juan Valley are using the
Miller Mesa site with increasing
frequency.
4 Desert Lake Waterfowl Manage-
ment Area comprises 2,480 acres
of acquired and publiC domain
land located in eastern Utah near
Huntington North Reservoir, Ad-
ministered by the Utah State Divi-
sion 01 Wildlife Resources since
January 1968, the area"s contri-
bution to waterfowl resources
management was significantly in-
creased by rehabilitation of the
historic Desert Lake Dike and
completion 01 five additional diked
areas below the existing impound-
ment. These structures are all
filled and the Jakes are used by
resident and game bird popula-
tions and migratory waterfowl.
Eflectiveness of the area will be
enhanced by improvement in one
water supply facility, The unfin-
ished work includes 18,000 leef of
plastic and concrete piping from
the end of the Huntington Canal
system northward, control struc-
tures, and a bypass direct to Des.
ert Lake.
