<br />002312 <br /> <br />rights on specified areas under its jurisdiction. Lands acquired by the States <br /> <br />upon admission to the Union were generally leased to stockmen. The enactment <br /> <br />of the Taylor Grazing Act in 1934 finally provided the means to establish control <br /> <br />over the public domain lands. It authorized the regulation of use and'the initia- <br /> <br />tion of rehabilitation measures. This latter was necessary as most of the lands <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />had badly deteriorated from many years of misuse. ''Excessive stocking of the <br />" <br />" <br /> <br />range had resulted in the diminution of-the better forage pla~ts and permitted <br /> <br />the establishment,or spread,. of less desirable plant species. <br /> <br />Q, . Present economic development <br /> <br />The economic growth rate of the report area is one of the highest in the <br /> <br />country. The growth is accompanied by an increasing diversification of the <br /> <br />economy, The principal sources of income for the area are currently derived <br /> <br />from manufacturing, mining, tourism. crops, and livestock in that order. <br /> <br />Manufacturing is the economic activity which has achieved the greatest <br /> <br />gains in recenf years. The manufacturing activities include eledronics, <br /> <br />aerospace industries, clothing,. chemicals, metal processing, food processing, <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />printing. and publishing, machinery, lumber, and a host of other light <br /> <br />manufacturing e\'lterprises, <br /> <br />The mining activity is based upon a wide variety of minerals, most im- <br /> <br />portant of which is copper. Asbestos, molybdenum, manganese, barite, lime, <br /> <br />gypsum, and perlite are among the long list of minerals whkh have become <br /> <br />substantial factors in the economy." <br /> <br />12 <br /> <br />
