Reccmna1ssance studies. -- Although reconnaissance geolog:!.c maps
are available for all Arizona at the 1:375,000 scale, much of the
iutol'lll&t1on 18 out-dated and incomplete. Proposed for :Immediate
remappins at scale 1:250,000 are the WilliElllls, Prescott, Phoenix, and
A,10 2-degree sheets (see fig. 4).

.

In California, the Division of Mines is preparing geologic maps
at the 1:250,000 scale. In the part of the State here of concern,
mappins is yet pending on the Needles, San Bernardino, Los Angeles,
Salton sea, Santa Ana, and Long Beach 2';degree sheets. It is proposed
that the Geolog:!.cal Survey' accelerate these particular maps by stuc\r1ng
the areas not well known. Cost of these reconnaissance studies is
est1mated at $190,000 yearly over the five-year period. !lhey' would
anticipate unusual difficul~ies that might be encountered in constructins ,,,
water-management works, and provide a necessary background for general
planning of more detailed studie's. Further, geologic reconnaissance
constitutes the first appraisal of the crustot the earth and the
characteristics and resources that will affect man's activities thereon.

General-purpose mapping.-- Geologic mapping and related studies,
at scales of 1:02,500 and 1:24,000, would provide immediate background
intol'lll&tion for Site planning.ot proposed water-development and
eng:!.neering projects and tor areas of urban development. !lhe following
are proposed:

1. !lhirv l5-minute quadrangles that include the general aline-
ment of the Central Arizona Aqueduct. Among these, four quadrangles
at and near Phoenix, also four at and near Tucson would serve
multipurpose planning related both to the aqueduct and to urban
expansion, water storage, and waste disposal.

.

2. !lhtrty-one l5-minute quadrangles that include the sites of
proposed da.ms, reservoirs, and tunnels of the Marble Ca:\Yon-
Ka.rlab, Coconino, Bridge Canyon, AlEllllO, sentinel, Buttes, and
McDowell projects and the Salt River above Roosevelt Reservoir,
all in Arizona; the Dil<ie project in Utah, and the Las Vegas
project in Nevada. Priority Ellllong these 31 quadrangles would
be arranged with the Bureau of Reclamation. No background
geologic studies of these are available.
I
3. IIi urban areas, four 15-minute quadrangles near Phoenix and
four near Tucson, as noted a.l.reatW; also, near Los Angeles, three
7!-minute q,uadranglesin addition to those currently in progress.

Est1mated cost of this general-purpose mapping would increase fran
$335,000 in the first year to $1,105,000 in the third, fourth, and fifth
years.
