Support Bureau of Reclamation funds for the Upper <br />Colorado River Endangered Fish Recovery and San <br />Juan River Basin Recovery Implementation Programs. <br /> <br />Upper Colorado River and San Juan River Basin Recovery <br />Program participams request Congressional support for <br />$6.950 million for FY 2001 in "Endangered Species <br />Recovery Programs and Activities for the Upper Colorado <br />Region:' ThiS amount would provide the Upper Colorado <br />River Endangered Fish Recovery Program with S 5. I 3 5 mil- <br />lion, the San Juan River Basin Recovery Impltmentation <br />Program \\'im $] .815 million. and Activities to Avoid <br />Jeopardy with $535.000. The $5.135 million, supported by <br />Upper Basin Program participants, would be used for water <br />acquisHion and capital construction projects including: <br /> <br />Upper Colorado River Endangered Fish <br />Recovery Program Activities <br /> <br />. Fish passage: Funds will be used to res lOre fish <br />passage on the Colorado River at the Grand Valley <br />Project and the Price-Smbb Diversion dams. These <br />activities will benefit raz.orback sucker and Colorado <br />pikeminnow by providing access to historic habitat, <br />and will support expanded populatIons to achieve <br />recovery goals. <br /> <br />. Waler acquisition: Funds will be used to complete <br />modification and automallon of canals to more effI- <br />ciently operate irrigation projects near Grand Junctlon. <br />Colorado, and dedicate the "saved" water ((J endan- <br />gered fish consistent with State \....'ater law. <br /> <br />. Nonnative fish conuol: Funds are needed to modify <br />at least 20 ponds/year to prevent nonnative fish from <br />escaping into the river where they may harm endan- <br />gered fish. Funds also are needed to design and install <br />a fish barrier on Elkhead ReserVOir to prevent nonnatlve <br />flsh from escaping into the Yampa River. <br /> <br />. Floodplain restoration: Funds are needed to CQn- <br />tmue land acquisnion, levee removal. and other <br />floodplain restoration acuvilies at high priority sites. <br />Restoring these floodplains is espeually imponalU <br />for razorback sucker and will bene fir a variety of <br />wetland-dependent wildlife. <br /> <br />. Endangered fish growout ponds: Existing hatch- <br />eries and native fish production facilities fall short <br />of meeting stocking needs. Funds are needed to <br />excavate or loca[e at least 100 acres of growOUt ponds <br />to raise razorback sucker and mher endangered fish <br />for further stocking into the Green, Colorado, <br />and Gunni!:.on rivers. <br /> <br />. Diversion canal screening: Funds are needed to con- <br />struct a scr~en at the Grand Valley Irrigation Company <br />Diversion Canal to prevelU endangered fish from being <br />dra....n out of the river and into the canals. The habitat <br />above the diverSIOn IS used by adult endangered fish. <br />Funds are also needed to constfllCt a screen at the <br /> <br />Tusher Wash Diversion Canal on the Green River in <br />Utah to prevent fish from bemg trapped in irrigation <br />canals and [he power plane inzakes. <br /> <br />San Juan River Basin Recovery Implementation <br />Program Activities <br /> <br />. In FY 2001 fish passage \\'ill be provided at the <br />Hogback Diversion and rearing ponds for razorback <br />sucker will be consuucted. Capita] e..xpenditures for <br />FY 2002 will be the construction of fish passage at <br />the Public Se[\ice Companr of New MexlCo weir and <br />removal of the Cude! Diversion Dam and replacement <br />with a siphon.
