<br />",'Cp, <br /> <br />.,1{;~ <br />._,,;;:;,:' <br />'.,~~ <br /> <br />Reconnaissance Report <br />on <br />Rio Grande Water Salvage Project, Colorado _ New Mexico <br /> <br />Colorado Division <br /> <br />IN'mODUCTION <br /> <br />Purpose and Scope <br /> <br />The purpose of this report is to present the results of an <br />investigation directed toward appraising, on a reconnaissance basis, <br />(1) the econOlllic feasibility of water salvage by reducing nonbeneficial <br />consumptive use of water within selected high water-loss areas throughout <br />the San Luis Valley of Colorado, and (2) the opportunities for increased <br />efficiency of use of the available water supply within the service area <br />of the San Luis Valley Water Conservancy District. A delineation of areas <br />of high losses, estimates of the amounts of such losses, proposals for <br />accomplishing watar salvage~ and econOlllic evaluation of potential water <br />salvage opportunities are presented in this report, together with discus- <br />sion of pOssible water mAnagement and conservation practices. The actions <br />required for more detailed investigations are also outlined. <br /> <br />, Public Law 858, 80th Congress <br /> <br />The Middle Rio Grande ProJect Comprehensive Plan was approved in <br />Section 203 of the Flood Control Act of June 30, 1948 (Public Law 858, <br />Both Congress, 2nd Session). This Act directed the Bureau of Reclamation, <br />in conjunction with other interested Federal agencies, to make studies and <br />determine feasible ways and means of reducing nonbeneficial const1lllption of <br />water in the flood plain of the Rio Grande and its principal tributaries <br />above Caballo Reservoir. <br /> <br />Loea! Coo:PeTatioa <br /> <br />The Stete of Colorado, the Conejos Water Conservancy District, <br />and the San Luis Valley Water Conservancy District are all extremely <br />interested in water salvage measures. The State of Colorado has contrib- <br />uted $15,000 and the San Luis Valley Water Conservancy District has con- <br />tributed $7,703. The Conservancy District has agreed to contribute an <br />additional $10,000 toward continuation of the work during Calendar Year <br />1964 . <br /> <br />It is at the suggestion of the Board of Directors of the San <br />Luis Valley Water Conservancy District that the salvage opportunities and <br />related water management practices wi thin the District' s service area are <br />included in 'this report. <br /> <br />t' ~, <br />',_J .. <br /> <br />..,-a, i..... <br />...,.' ..% ,J <br /> <br />1 <br />
