These lands were among the first to be irrigated by
diversions from the Rio Grande. Initially, crop production was excellent,
but, in time, continued applications of water to the land with practically
nQ provision for drainage resulted in portions of the area becoming seeped.
Delivery of additional water would result in about 3,500 acre-feet of
additional return flow per year and would intensify the need for drainage.
Drainage bY' pumped wells strategicallY' located along the eastern edge of
the area would probably be the most effective type of drainage. The
return flow thus pumped could be delivered to the Main Conveyance Chamlel
of the Closed Basin Division for subsequent delivery to the Rio Grande.
The total delivery to the Main Conveyance Channel from the Mosca-Sargent
area under this potential water use would amount to the 3,500 acre-feet
of return flow plus an estimated 8;600 acre-feetdellvered during the
nonirrigation season, or a total of 12,100 acre-feet.

Additional detailed studies beyond the scope of this report would
be needed tof'ullY' analyze the feasibility of this possible alternate use
of, water after Colorado has attained a debit-free Rio Grande Comp!l.ct
status.

r ...
\~.
