Industrial and Associated Use

The resident population of the basin in 1960 was

12,330. This is 1,520 less than the reported population of

13,850 for 1930. An increase in the production of strip-

mine coal, with the construction and operation of the Hayden

electric power generating plant of the Colorado Ute Electric

Association have resulted in some net increase in basin pop-

ulation in recent years. It is estimated that the basin

population has now reached 13,770.

As discussed in the Upper Yampa Subbasin section of

this report, the mining and processing of strip mine coal and

power generation will require the use of a large quantity of

water. An allowance for this purpose of an annual stream de-

pletion of 70,000 acre feet has been provided for in the re-

port. This is exclusive of associated municipal and domestic

use.

The anticipated total population after expanded
irrigation, the mining and processing of coal and other basin
development is estimated to be 24,000 people. This increase
in population, would be largely located in the general vicinity
of Steamboat Springs, Hayden and Craig where the industrial
development of the basin will take place. An additional
small loss of population in some of the outlying agricultural
sections of the basin is anticipated.
The present stream depletion resulting from muni-
cipal and industrial water use, livestock use, reservoir

21

,
