Geological
Survey'. The investigation was a statistical analysis of
historical water quality and stream flow data, The objectives of
the study were to 1) apply analytical techniques that detect
changes and determine if one or combinations of techniques could
be used to separate individual land-use effects on water quality
from cumulative effects, and 2) describe and quantify the
effects, if any, of coal mine operations on water quality of the
San Juan RiVer, the second largest tributary to the Colorado
River, Ei~ht principal analytical techniques were utilized by
the USGS in the evaluation. The investigation concluded that
none of the analytical methods used showed any increase in
concentration of dissolved solids, dissolved potassium, or
specific conductance in the San Juan River downstream from the
San Juan and Navajo coal mines in San Juan County.

'f

J
"

Water Riqhts

':i"
,

i

La Plata Coal company has made application to and received
approval frOm the New Mexico State Engineer to divert and
consumptively use up to 250 acre-feet per year of water at the
La Plata Mine.
