Bureau of Reclamation

March 1982

In Newsletter 12, issued in August of 1981, we described four
alternative locations for the proposed powerplent in the
Dunham Point area. north of the MCPhee Reservoir site. The
two illustrated below now appear to be the most feasible.
They are the original Dunhl. Point forebly-"CPhee Reservoir
afterbey alternative and a new plan, the Callpbell

forebay-PlIteau

Creek

afterney

alternathe.

The

Peaking
Power
Investigation
ID~raffifll~f1~
cI~t H~~ 18 1982

Campbell-Plateau alternative looks like the most prooising of
the two, and we plan to recommend to our regional and

Washington, D.C. offfces that

detailed feasibili~

investigations concentrate on that plan. Both alternatives
Ife explained in more detail on page two.

. . .

....-. .-.....

."

8

You might remember from Newsletter
11, that these alternatives are
all pwnped-storage peaking
powerplants. A pwnped-storage
project f nvol ves forebIY and
afterbay reservoirs. Water is
pumped from the afterbey to the
forebey during the middle of the
night, when power is less
expenshe. It is later released
back to the afterbay. drhf ng I
turbine to produce power when
demand lIpeaksll for a few hours in
the morning and early evening. In
effect, a pumped-storage plant
stores electrici~ like a battery,
but in the form of water. In the
United States, there are now about
10,000 megawatts of installed
capaci~ in 25 pumped-storage
plants.

~~-
~~/~..
..
