Introduction

In this region, agriculture plays an especially important role.

The Missouri ranks 3rd among the 20 Water Resources Regions

in agricultural earnings. In terms of the percent of total regional

earnings accounted for by agriculture, the Missouri ranks 2nd

among the 20 Regions (11.4 percent of regional earnings).

Total Personal Income and Population (Chart 1)

Between 1968 and 2020 total personal income in the Missouri

is projected to increase about 8 times -- from $25.4 billion in

1968 to $203.6 billion in 2020. The rate of increase is less than

the eight-and-one-half-fold increase projected for total personal

income nationally.

During the same time period total population in the Missouri

is expected to increase 1.8 times -- from 8.3 million to 15.1

million. This rate of increase is slower than the doubling pro-

jected for the Nation's total population.
